Sex education has again come centrestage as anything related to sex can be, after the very secular Union minister for human resources Arjun Singh made sex education mandatory for school children. Nevermind his ministerial colleague Priya Ranjandas Munshi banning FTV and HBO for showing vulgarity, whatever that means.
There is so much of confusion created by people on both sides of the fence; and the 'manufactured' confusion and outrage is deliberate. The idea is to obfuscate the issue when you cannot win the argument.
Let me explain. In the midst of this raging controversy are reports of youngsters embarrassing residents of Band Stand, Mumbai by their public display of passion. Police rounded up nearly 180 college going couples for lip locking in public. Well, to be fair that can seriously embarrass people who are not used to it. I once had faced such an incredulous situation when watching TV at a friend's house. A couple during courtship were shown passionately kissing in a Sunday movie on TV. My friend's father watching the movie along with us turned his face in embarrassment.
Though the incident was not lost on me I realised that one man's food is another man's poison. Then, when I started my career with a youth magazine in 1991 I had another edifying experience. I was making the agony uncle's column where a Bollywood star was replying to youngsters' sex problems.
When a teenage guy wrote in asking the star how should he be prepared for his first sexual intercourse, the star replied matter-of-factly: "you don't have to read any manual for having sex, you have to do what comes naturally to you." is the star trying to suggest there is no need for sex education? Or does it mean that all this hangama over sex education is only to titilate young minds to have unbridled sex?
As someone said, do animals have any sex education? How do they procreate so successfully?
Again, in the middle of these reports sexual, there is a front page anchor report in the Times of India that four 12-year boys coupled with their classmates to have an orgy in the 15 minute recess in school in full view of their classmates. And instead of giving them advice on protected sex as so many in Indian media would suggest the American school arrested them and put them in juvenile jail! This happened in the US if I have not mentioned that to you. So what went wrong in the mecca of sex education?!
Finally, I have a poser for all those people who want to ban sex and violence on TV. Ban Discovery and National Geographic channels first because every time I put it on I only see animals killing each or copulating with each other. Also, all those people for ethical treatment for animals should first stop those carnivorous animals killing innocent, defenceless smaller animals. I have seen a lion tearing open a deer after a hot chase and the camera even caught the pumping heart of the poor animal as the lion prised open its torso. And also, I find it extremely embarrassing to watch huge animals, all hung, mounting on the female for a passion filled sex while my son asks me innocently: "this is how I mount on you every morning in bed to wake you up." I give him no sex education.
